First Week in Lent
Great Lent begins with Forgiveness Sunday Vespers, served March 10 at
5:00 PM. We hear Lent announced: "Turn not away Thy face from Thy
child, for I am afflicted!" The faithful ask each other for
forgiveness. For the first time in Lent, we pray the prayer of St
Ephraim, with its accompanying prostrations:
O Lord and Master of my life: take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions and
not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages.
During the first week of Lent, the Canon of St Andrew is read over four
consecutive evenings (Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14,
each evening at 7 PM). The Canon is a long series of penitential verses
based on Biblical themes, to each of which the people respond "Have
mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me." (Approximate service time: 1
hour, 10 minutes)
